As I write this column the weather is turning colder and people across Islwyn are considering how many hours a day to put the heating on.
This isn’t just something happening now and again, it’s become the norm. Millions of ordinary families are struggling to keep up with bills that are rising faster than wages. Since 2010 gas and electricity bills rose by an average of £300 a year.
We need to make life easier for hardworking families by creating a tough new regulator with the power to challenge the power companies and keep prices down.
The 25th of November marks White Ribbon day aimed at stopping domestic violence. As I have said before in this column two woman a week are killed by a current or former partner. This figure is appalling and it is up to all of us to challenge abuse where we see it. White Ribbon Day includes a pledge “I pledge never to commit, condone, or remain silent about men's violence against women in all its forms”. I have joined thousands of others in signing up to the pledge. If you would like to join me visit this web page www.whiteribboncampaign.co.uk
I recently visited Sainsbury’s Pontllanfraith to find out how the store supports their Local Charity Partners, and local schools and their involvement with the Active Kids scheme. I was delighted to be able to award Daniel Chivers, age eight from Pentwynmawr Primary school his prize for winning the childrens under 12 competition to design their own jute bag. I would like to congratulate Lynda from Sainsbury’s who does so much to connect with local charities in Islwyn.
This column, gives me the opportunity to pay tribute to local people. I would like to wish the Rev Marion Barge of St Marys Church the Pentllwyn and her husband Brian all the best in Marion’s well-earned retirement. I have known Marion for many years and had the pleasure of serving with her on Pentllwyn Primary school governors. The children adored Marion and the work she has done for the school and the community is very much appreciated. Also a big congratulations to Evan Saddler, eight, a pupil at Blackwood Primary School who will be the mascot for the Wales game against Tonga.
Finally can I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
