A WELSH band is aiming for an alternative number one this festive season, with a charity cover a Christmas classic sung by late Ebbw Vale vocalist Brian Hibbard.

The Barry Horns have recorded a charity version of Only You – 30 years after it scored a Christmas number one and launched the career of Hibbard and The Flying Pickets.

The working class anthem spent five weeks at the summit of the UK charts in 1983, and now the brass-wielding official supporter band of the Welsh football team are hoping to breathe some new life into it, for Prostate Cymru.

Only You was originally written by Yazoo but it was made famous by the British a capella vocal group, fronted by Hibbard, who died of prostate cancer last year, aged 65.

He went on to appear in Twin Town, Coronation Street and Pobl Y Cwm, before his death.

The Barry Horns also filmed a video at the Capel Hotel pub in Bargoed.

Trumpet player, James Watkins, 33, said: “Brian was an amazing Welshman and the song is a very strong Welsh song, with links to the 1984 Miners Strike.

“Despite the band’s socialist politics, Margaret Thatcher once claimed it was her favourite song, and everyone knows this version.

“We just hope we’ve done it justice.”

Chris Leek, 52, on alto saxophone, added: “We know men don’t usually like talking about their health, so if we can draw attention to it by singing, in a pub, then we’ve done our bit.”

Only You is released on iTunes, Monday, December 2.

The video will be launched on YouTube on Monday, November 25.

The Barry Horns will be performing Only You at Clwb Ifor Bach in Cardiff on Saturday, December 21.
