Abercarn raised actress Bettrys Jones features in Sherman Cymru’s new Christmas show The Sleeping Beauties.
Sleeping Beauties is a new version of the Sleeping Beauty classic tale but instead of one beauty there are two…Dawn and Eve.
“They are two best friends,” Bettrys tells Andy Howells, “one a princess and one is slightly nerdier and geekier. It starts off with the traditional version; Eve sacrifices herself for a thousand years so her best friend Dawn can live and so they wake up a thousand years later in a kind of strange futuristic time.”
Sleeping Beauties is Bettrys first performance at the Sherman Theatre. In the last few years the former pupil of Ysgol Gwynllyw has performed in Edward II (National Theatre); Praxis Makes Perfect, The Dark Philosopher (National Theatre Wales); The Mouse and his Child, A Midsummer’s Nights Dream, Comedy of Errors (Royal Shakespeare Company) plus she played Megan in Channel 4’s Skins.
“In the National I played Prince Edward in Edward II, so I played a boy,” says Bettrys, “It was lovely it’s always nice in a way to play something entirely different to what you are especially playing a boy when you’re a girl. It’s a kind of theatrical device really. But it was really good fun. I got to be a king in the end and chopped someone’s head off so covered a lot of ground,” she laughs.
Bettrys is pleased to be back on home territory and excited about her role in Sleeping Beauties: “There will be a lot of magic, love, friendship and a few laughs as well as a cross dressing villain. It’s got it all really,” she laughs.
