A NEWPORT fiddle player has released her first album at 13-years-old.
Meg Cox, of Clevedon Road, has been playing fiddle for the last two years and has now released her debut album: A Regular Little Houdini.
The Celtic folk songs featured on the album is are also the soundtrack to the show of the same name written and performed by Daniel Llewelyn-Williams.
The album includes three songs: Half Penny Waltz, Dock’s Disaster Verse and Tommy’s Letter which was written by the band Rusty Shackle.
The St Julian’s Comprehensive School pupil wrote Half Penny Waltz herself and was approached by Mr Llewelyn-Williams to use her music in his show based on the life of a boy obsessed with legendary escapologist Harry Houdini who visited Newport docks in the 1900s.
David Cox, Megan’s dad, said: “Meg absolutely loved recording all the material.
“She’s writing her own songs and is now starting to write some more contemporary song ones as well.
“She started playing with the Irish drum, the bodhran, when she was about four-years-old and then learnt the mandolin, guitar and the fiddle.
“I have always had them lying around the house and she just used to pick them up and play.
“I am incredibly proud of both my daughters, no matter what they do.
“For now Meg has invested in this and it’s what she wants to do.”
The album took two days to record and features Meg playing the fiddle and singing a selection of songs.
She has previously performed with the folk pop band Paper Aeroplanes and has also appeared at the Bath folk festival.
Mr Cox added: “She’s got a few of her friends interested in the violin – slowly she’s getting more support for folk music.”
The album is available for £4.99 at www.megcox.co.uk or at the showing of A Regular Little Houdini at the Riverfront, Newport, between January 23-25 next year.
