NEWPORT’S Celtic Manor Resort has got on board with the Jesus Cares hamper campaign by donating hundreds of pounds worth of goods for struggling families.

Jesus Cares, funded by the Big Lottery Fund, started in 2009 as a result of community organisations contacting the Kings Church to ask for food for families they were working with, who had no money to feed their children.

The organisation has launched its Christmas hamper campaign and Argus has got on board with the project again this year to try and raise the profile of the work already carried out by the church, based at Lower Dock Street, Newport, and encourage as many readers and businesses as possible to pitch in to donate Christmas treats that will make each hamper extra special this year.

The Celtic Manor is one such business to have backed the campaign donating Christmas Puddings, cereal, tea, squash, tinned fruit, syrup, sugar, chocolate, biscuits, jams, chutneys and crisps with a total value of around £350.

Celtic Manor spokesman Paul Williams said: “We were delighted to donate to the King’s Church Jesus Cares Campaign once again this year. It’s an excellent cause, bringing much needed Christmas cheer to families in our surrounding area who really need it. Our pastry chefs have cooked up some additional Christmas puddings and we’ve also donated some festive goodies from our shop including jams, biscuits and chutneys.

The Jesus Cares delivery van turned up to the resort yesterday to pick up the festive treats to pack in to hampers ahead of the Newport deliveries this week.

Faye Edwards, of Jesus Cares, said: “The donation is so generous. It is lovely to see them wanting to get involved to help make Christmas even more special for families who don’t have much.”

So far 2,000 hampers, each worth between £20 and £25 have already been distributed to agencies across South Wales such as Teen Challenge, Solace, Gwent Probation, and Big Issue, who will disperse the hampers to clients in need with the aim of delivering over 3,000 hampers.
