KING’S Church, Newport, delivered more than 100 food hampers to Gaer Community Centre as part of their ongoing Jesus Cares campaign.

The hampers – worth between £20 and £25 – were delivered to the centre by volunteers, to be distributed to people in the area at food banks this week.

Jesus Cares, funded by the Big Lottery Fund, started in 2009 as a result of community organisations contacting the King’s Church to ask for food for families they were working with, who had no money to feed their children.

Since then, more than 55,000 hampers have been delivered across South Wales. Yvonne Burgess, Newport West health co-ordinator, accepted the hampers on behalf of the community centre.

“Without King’s Church this wouldn’t happen,” she said.

“They’ve touched thousands of people’s lives with their hard work and they deserve credit.

“They give us these hampers and we distribute them around different areas through the week.”

The food banks where hampers are handed out take place three times a week with Newport west distributing them in Gaer, Maesglas and Duffryn.

Marcia Clement, of Jesus Cares, said: “It’s great to go through agencies like this as if you get people coming in then they don’t just get the hamper, they also get people that will help them.

“You have to go out and help them and meet their needs.

“If someone is hungry then feed them, it’s that simple and that is what we aim to do.

“People see your heart by what you go out and do rather than what you say you’re going to do.

“Agencies are pivotal for us as people are not just being given a hand-out they are being given a help up at the same time.”

The Argus is once again supporting the project this year to try to raise awareness of the work that the church and agencies are doing to help support people.
