A WOMAN was fighting for her life in intensive care last night after being injured in a crash which killed a man in Ebbw Vale last week.
Ann Webb was returning home from visiting an elderly uncle in hospital when the car was involved in a crash which killed 21-year-old Tom Baynton, of Gilwern, on Waun-y-pound Road last Friday.
Mrs Webb, 66, from Usk, is breathing on her own at Nevill Hall Hospital but suffered a broken back and sternum, said her sister Mary Nelmes.
Mrs Webb’s son Shane, who was also in the car, was badly bruised but otherwise unhurt.
Ms Nelmes said: “The whole family is traumatised. I go in and talk to her but she isn’t coming round. She has four children and 10 grandchildren and we spent all day every day there. She’s a lovely person, she does everything for anyone. She doesn’t deserve this.”
Mrs Webb ran a taxi business with her late husband Mike for many years and lived in Usk all her life, said her sister.
“The internal bleeding has stopped and we are waiting for results of scans,” she said. “That’s all we can do. I’m waiting for her to open her eyes. After losing her father last year, her daughter has said she can’t go through it again, it’s too traumatic.”
Since Friday almost 3,000 people have joined the Facebook page “RIP Tom Baynton” and left dozens of tributes to the popular former Brynmawr Comprehensive School pupil.
Gwent Police urge anyone who saw the crash to call 101 quoting log 459 29/11/13.
