With less than three weeks until Christmas the late night shoppers in the city of Cardiff were drawn to a memorable night with Boyzone in the Motorpoint Arena.
The cinematic reel projection at the opening of the show drew the audience down memory lane. A nostalgic night celebrating the bands 20th year together and their new album - BZ20. The nearly packed arena, mainly female and of a maturing age, were up on their feet when Boyzone were elevated to the stage in front of the moving images projected on the large screen. Feet were tapping instantly to the sound of “Games of Love”.
Each musical section within the show was linked via the video wall with all four members (Ronan, Keith, Shane and Mikey) discussing the past, present and their future with their adoring friends. Boyzone performed the memorable slick boy band moves along with even a rhythmic interlude of Irish dancing steps with their glamorous dancers. Both moving images and dancers cunningly blended into one at times on the video wall.
There was a very intimate mid –section between the fans and Boyzone when they paid tribute to their brother, Stephen Gately, “the missing part of the puzzle” (Mikey). The fans were ecstatic when the members performed an emotional rendition of “Better” along with Steo’s voice. “His energy and light still shines through” (Ronan).
There was even a timely festive feature within the programme of their first ever Christmas song “The hour before Christmas”.
The finale was a mixture of the old and new which featured “Love you for a Reason”, “No matter what” and the show stopper “Who we are”. To close the show Boyzone disappeared in an instant via trap doors on the set. Was this a twist tribute to Keith when he previously had a comedy moment falling off the stage during a performance years ago or were they simply a figment of my imagination from the past?
