A MAN in his 40s was rescued by police on mud banks next to the River Usk in Newport this morning.
Police negotiated the man, who is from Newport, away from the banks near The Steel Wave.
He was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital for an assessment and was released at about 11am.
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service engines from Malpas and Maindee were sent as a precaution.
A call was made at 6.03am and firemen left at 6.30am.
And fire crews from Cwmbran were called to deal with wheelie bins that had been deliberately set alight this morning.
They were first called to Fairhill Walk, Fairwater at 5.14am to deal with one bin that was on fire.
Later, at 8.30am, they were called to Tyn-y-Coed, where four bins and a fence had been set alight. They left at 8.41am.
