A ROGERSTONE woman celebrated her 100th birthday this week with her 94-year-old husband and family members who had travelled thousands of miles to congratulate her on her special day.

Dorothy Yetman, celebrated her 100th birthday on December 4 with family

Mrs Yetman, who has been married to Alan for 68 years, was born on London Road, Maindee, on December 4, 1913, and moved to Rogerstone around two years old.

She helped her mother working on Ty Sign Farm until the war when she volunteered for the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) in 1941, repairing barrage balloons, and was stationed in Stanmore, north London.

It was then that Mrs Yetman met Royal Navy husband Alan, from Newfoundland, at a Newfoundland club in London.

They married on July 18, 1945, and moved back to the farm after the war.

Mrs Yetman has a son Jim Yetman, 66, and daughter Sylvia Barber, 67, and two grandchildren, Caroline Lotter, 33, and Mark Yetman, 31, with a great grandson expected in April.

Mrs Yetman said: “I feel fine and I am having a nice day with plenty of visitors. We have got balloons and there are cards and flowers galore.”

Her son Jim, 66, travelled all the way from South Africa.

“She is 100, so it’s a big occasion,” he said.

played a big part in community life, with strong links to local shops including her regular greengrocers Evans and Clarks in Rogerstone.
