A Welsh Ambulance spokeswoman said the dead driver was a man in his seventies. He was taken to Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport where he later died.

The ambulance was called at 8.36am and that they attended two minutes later with two rapid response cars and an ambulance.

UPDATE: 12.11pm

The driver involved in this morning's crash has died, police have confirmed.

They said the silver Rover car collided with a tree on Henllys Way near the Shell garage. They were called at 8.40am.

No other vehicles were involved and the driver was pronounced dead at hospital.
