A MAN was allegedly attacked by in a city centre street on Monday evening, police say.
Officers have arrested two men who were tonight in custody – and are looking for three others - on suspicion of assault in connection with the incident in Turner Street, Newport, at 6.10pm.
A man received head injuries and was taken to Royal Gwent Hospital after the incident. The road was closed by police for around three hours.
Police are looking for information on three men who they believe were involved.
A Gwent Police spokesman said: “Officers are now investigating the circumstances of the incident which involved up to five men described as being Asian and in their 30s, allegedly attacking the man before leaving the scene in a white transit van.
“The van has now been recovered and is being examined by crime scene investigators.
“He [the injured man] is described as being in a stable condition and his injuries are described as not being serious.”
One resident, who did not wish to be named, said he was walking home when he saw the events unfold.
He said: “I was walking down the street when I saw a slight altercation between a couple of men.
“Suddenly a white transit van showed up and about three or four men jumped out."
The eyewitness said a man was punched and kicked.
