THE Bishop of Monmouth Richard Pain and the Dean of Monmouth The Very Reverend Lister Tonge were among those to sign a book of condolence for Nelson Mandela in Newport.
The book at Newport Cathedral is open for people to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela and is expected to remain in the cathedral until Christmas.
After this it will be sent to South Africa.
The 95-year-old former leader, who was imprisoned for 27 years for opposing apartheid before being released in 1990 to forge a new democratic South Africa, died on December 5.
A state funeral was held yesterday and was attended by more than 4,000 people, including Mr Mandela's family members, African leaders and several heads of state.
A post on the Diocese of Monmouth website stated: “The link between our Diocese and the Diocese of the Highveld in South Africa was celebrated and renewed in October when Bishop David of the Highveld celebrated communion with Bishop Richard.”
“People in the Diocese of Monmouth have the opportunity to share their condolences on the death of Nelson Mandela with our brothers and sisters in the Highveld by signing a Book of Condolence which has been placed in Newport Cathedral.
Newport Cathedral is normally open daily between 10am and 5pm.
