THERE have been over 50 reported sightings of missing Newport teen Nida Naseer across the UK – but none have so far been confirmed, say police.
Coleg Gwent student Nida, who turned 19 last week, disappeared over a month ago after taking out the bins at her home in Linton Street, Pill, on December 28. Her family said she had no belongings with her and may not even have been wearing shoes.
Despite going door to door in 12 streets to ask if anyone has information and taking 114 statements, police are still at a loss as to what has happened to her.
This week they will bring in four Punjabi and Urdu speaking officers from Manchester, the Metropolitan and Thames Valley forces to try to move the investigation forward.
Nida is of Asian-Pakistani appearance and has long dark hair, is slim and is five feet three inches tall. She was last known to be wearing blue jeans and a black top.
Despite numerous appeals, extensive local searches and enquiries including house to house, leaflet drops and CCTV enquiries, Nida has not been found.
Video appeals from her father Naseer Tahir, mother Najma Tahir and sister Shamyla Naseer have reached almost 2,000 YouTube views between them but police are still at a loss as to where Nida may be.
In the emotional appeal Naseer Tahir tells his daughter: "We want you in any cost, we want you in any condition.
"It's more than three weeks and we have still not found any clue about Nida. We are very worried about Nida and Nida's safety and we are appealing again and again. If anyone knows about Nida, tell us. We just want Nida to come back.
Pakistani-born Nida was upset about her family’s asylum seeker status barring her from going to university, her family have said, which they believe could have been why she went missing.
A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said: “We have had over 50 reported sightings from across the UK. None have led to a positive identification of Nida.”
The search was ongoing, she added, with officers looking at all lines of enquiry.
Police have scoured the city for the teen, searching along Nash Road between the roundabout and Meadows Road near the Coleg Gwent Newport City campus and into Maindee as well as Pill. They have also searched grassland and rivers but have not found anything.
Police reiterated the appeal for anyone with information to come forward by phoning 101.
