PUPILS, staff and parents from Ynysddu Primary School helped to plant vegetables and fruit trees as they continued to work towards their Platinum ECO Schools award.
The school joined volunteers and staff from Sainsbury’s in Pontllanfraith to carry out the work after being inspired by the Incredible Edible Network, which started in West Yorkshire.
It is a community organisation which urges people to work together to plant vegetables and fruit trees in waste areas around their town. People then help themselves to the produce.
The school provided a sustainable orchard as they felt it would improve the environment and benefit the village. They bought 110 fruit trees and shrubs from Blackwood Garden Centre before planting them.
The School ECO Committee and its helpers then held a fundraising raffle, with prizes donated by Sainsbury’s.
