THE devastated family of a young mum from Tredegar who died in a car crash just weeks before she was due to give birth have paid tribute to a “beautiful, happy girl”.
Sophie Williams, 20, was on her way home after celebrating Valentine’s Day with her fiancé Ben Morgan, 28, when they were involved in a two-car collision on the A465 Heads of the Valleys Road between Brynmawr and Garnlydan at around 11pm on Friday.
Miss Williams was in the passenger seat and took the impact of the crash, Mr Morgan said.
The family said the collision left Miss Williams with broken legs and a broken pelvis. She later suffered a cardiac arrest and kidney failure.
Her mother Maria said: “She fought for a while, she kept going all night. They brought the baby round and she breathed for a while but she died at 11.50pm.
“She thought the world of her partner; her family was all that mattered to her. She was my everything – all of my children are. She was much loved. I’d like to say thank you to everyone for the kind messages and support offered to my family at this very sad time.”
Her family said Miss Williams lived for her fiancé Ben, a mechanic, and their one-year-old daughter Mia.
Family gathered at Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny as Miss Williams was treated. Her brother Shane even offered to donate a kidney to save his sister.
Mr Morgan suffered a broken nose, ribs and collarbone himself but refused treatment while Miss Williams fought for life.
He said: “I won’t ever forget about Sophie, and I won’t let Mia forget her either.”
Miss Williams leaves behind her daughter Mia, sister Shannon Thomas, brothers Skyle Thomas and Shane Williams, foster brother Shanty Loma, mother Maria and a large family near Tredegar as well as in America.
Police said the collision involved a blue Peugeot 207 and a silver Peugeot 307. Mr Morgan and Miss Williams were in the 307. The Basingstoke man driving the 207 was treated for shock.
Gwent Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 101 quoting log 544 14/02/14.
