NEWPORT East AM John Griffiths will be lending his support to the Argus-backed Newport half marathon again by taking part for a second year running.

The Welsh Government minister for culture and sport is aiming to raise money for Tom Carter, a 20-year-old cricketer from Newport who lost his left leg to be bone cancer in 2013.

Mr Carter is now trying to raise £25,000 for a new prosthetic leg with a microprocessor in the knee, which will allow more flexibility and enable him to play cricket again.

“It’s a great cause to try and raise money for,” said Mr Griffiths. “I heard about it as he plays for the same cricket club that I do.

“I thought it was a very worthwhile cause so hopefully it can help him play cricket again.

“This is the second year I’m running as it really is a great event. Whenever St David’s Hospice Care put something on it normally is and I always look forward to their events.

“The work they do is excellent and it’s something that I come across often. I’m pleased to be in the position to be able to hopefully raise the profile of this event.”

Mr Griffiths set a time of one hour 50 minutes when he ran the 13.1 mile race last year, and is hoping to beat that on Sunday, March 2.

“I’m aiming to complete it in a faster time but I think that may be a bit optimistic to be honest,” he added. “I’ve not been out as much as I’d have liked but I’ll certainly be trying to beat it.”

St David’s Hospice Care chief executive Emma Saysell said: “It’s amazing to have John as a supporter of the work that we do.

“He is running the event for the second year running which shows his commitment to us but also his commitment to an event that is great for the city of Newport.”
