A NEWPORT woman will be pushing her body to the limit when she competes in the Argus-backed Newport Half Marathon on Sunday, March 2.
Claire Broome, 34, will be running for St David’s Hospice Care due to seeing first-hand the work that they do thanks to her husband, Kris Broome’s, involvement with the charity.
Even though it’s the first time that Mrs Broome has run over 13 miles, she is confident that she’ll be able to finish the race – but is hoping to do it in one go without stopping.
“I’ve never run this distance before,” said Mrs Broome. “But training has been going well and I’ve been running a few times a week since October.
“I wouldn’t say I’m nervous as, unless there’s an injury, I’m confident I’ll get round the course.
“Last year I went to watch all the runners and it was very inspiring to see so I thought I’d get involved with this great event this year and it’ll be a good feeling if I can complete it and cross the finishing line.”
One of the main reasons that Mrs Broome has committed to the event is to raise money for St David’s Hospice Care.
“My husband works for St. David’s so I’m very familiar with the incredible service they provide,” she said. “I’m sure that most people that live in Gwent know someone who has needed the care of the hospice and what a remarkable charity it is.
“My husband will be busy organising the event and most of my family are volunteering by marshalling or manning the water stations so I’m sure I’ll have a few cheers or heckles along the way.”
“I would love to see it [the Newport half] grow into a bigger, better half marathon, secured on Newport’s annual calendar. Unfortunately, Newport is behind other cities when it comes to such events and it needs the support of the council, sponsors and residents to help develop it alongside our developing city.”
