ABERGAVENNY Tourist Information Centre is facing an uncertain future unless Monmouthshire council can find a new funding partner.

Brecon Beacons National Park Authority, which runs the centre next to the bus station in partnership with the county council, approved the closure on Friday as part of a bid to save £650,000 over the next two years.

Monmouthshire council contributes £35,000 a year towards the service on top of utilities and maintenance but cannot make up the shortfall given a budget gap of £664,000 still remains for next year.

Talks are being held with Abergavenny Town Council and Monmouthshire council about how the service can continue and it is clear it will have to relocate, with the Tithe Barn, Monk Street a possible option.

A spokeswoman for Brecon Beacons National Park Authority said three posts would be made redundant out six redundancies in the authority but no timetable has been set. The public toilets at Llanthony Priory will also close as part of the cuts.

She said: “The closure of Abergavenny Tourist Information Centre was approved in principal although discussions are ongoing with Abergavenny Town Council and Monmouthshire Council with the aim of securing an alternative option.”

Cllr Doug Edwards said: “We cannot afford to not to have a Tourist Information Centre.”

It was agreed to contribute £10,000 towards the service in next year’s budget.
