PUPILS at a Newbridge primary school have been rewarded for their environmental efforts.
Eco Clubbers in Pentwynmawr Primary School were given the Eco Schools Award during the Tidy Wales Awards at a ceremony in Cardiff.
Environment charity Keep Wales Tidy hosts the annual awards to thank community groups, organisations and schools for their dedication to the environment. Pupils at Pentwynmawr Primary School received the award from the minister for natural resources and food Alun Davies and former Wales international rugby player Tom Shanklin.
Among the pupils’ achievements were clearing a stretch of the River Sirhowy riverbank to provide a safe habitat for the release of salmon fry and creating a film about the importance of keeping riverbanks litter-free.
They have encouraged people not to use carrier bags and have run a litter campaign. They shared their findings with the school and campaigned to reduce litter in key areas.
Headteacher Jackie Nash said: “The pupils thoroughly deserve this award for their hard work. They are always keen to be green and are passionate about improving their local environment.”
