THE menswear spring/summer 2014 collections hit the catwalk in June of last year and while some of the main trends to come of it may be a little... jazzy for your taste, there are still some very wearable looks to choose from.
Head to toe white may not be the best choice, but why not try white or off white chinos?
Stripes, as always, are a safe bet for both genders for spring. On the catwalks they went for bold block strips (on tailored suits), which are eye-catching but only for the brave.
A more wearable way to rock stripes is to go for the standard nautical white and navy stripes that are always prevalent at this time of the year. So there's no excuse to not get your stripe on.
Also remember that florals are not for girls. Florals are definitely for real men.
The floral tend, which was shown by big names like Gucci, Prada and Dries von Notten, saw them all sending out their boys in full flower power regalia. Luckily, it has filtered down to the high street and you can get some really lovely pieces for a fraction of the price.
If a full head to toe look seems daunting, invest in some easy to wear shorts or swimming trunks with a floral pattern.
If you have a horror of skinny jeans, you’ll be happy to discover another trend to hit the catwalks in a big way was a forties and fifties American beat vibe. It brought all the glamour of the period with its loose-fitting trousers cut high on the waist - think more Allen Ginsberg than Simon Cowell. To go for the full look, team with chalk stripe details and collars worn outside jackets a la Jack Kerouac.
Trench coats in a variety of shades also hit the catwalks for SS14. A trench coat is timeless and classic and will never go out of style, so it is definitely worth investing in.
If you want the crème de la crème of trenches, look no further than Britain’s very own fashion powerhouse Burberry, which while expensive, will last you a lifetime.
If you want it to tide you over specifically for spring and summer, opt for a coat made of lighter fabric and in brighter and more colourful shades than the usual camel, beige and grey.
Talking of grey, pale grey suits were everywhere at the shows. Perfect for summer weddings, parties and events, a slim-fitting light cotton suit will take you anywhere.
Another big trend saw tops, short s, trousers, coats and accessories in every shade of pink imaginable sent down the catwalk, so update your wardrobe with at least one item.
Finally, Valentino and Belstaff sent models down the runway in army fatigues, so crack out your camouflage print cargo pants from the 90s, because they are very much back in style.
