THE owner of a house at the side of a Newport dual carriageway called for the speed limit to be lowered last night, after the fourth car crash there in eight years.

Part of the A4051 Malpas Road was closed southbound last night after a car overturned and crashed into three parked cars directly opposite the Harvester restaurant, demolishing part of a garden wall at the home of Nick White and his family and cracking the house itself.

No one was seriously hurt and no one has been arrested, said a spokeswoman for Gwent Police, but the Welsh Ambulance Service said the driver was taken to hospital.

It is not clear whether speed was a factor in the crash.

The driver walked away from the incident, said Mr White, 42, who wants to sell the house where he's lived for 17 years after so many incidents, including the night before Christmas Eve, 2007, when a bus crashed into a car outside the house.

Malpas Road has a 40mph speed limit and a speed camera opposite the junction leading to Newport High School.

"It's a miracle no one has been killed," said Mr White, who was sitting in the living room of his house when the crash happened at around 6.30pm last night and whose classic Ford Sierra was written off as a result.

Two other cars belonging to the family were also damaged as was the garden wall, which has already been rebuilt once.

Mr White, who works as a recovery driver and lives at the house with his three sons, wife Ruth and his mother-in-law, is currently recovering from knee surgery and he was "totally devastated" at the loss of the car, which had done just 62,000 miles and was being prepared for car shows in the summer.

"I can repair most things but this is ruined," he said. "I will never be able to replace it, it's a classic. I am struggling to deal with it at the moment. I'm just glad no one was hurt.

"They need to drop the speed limit or move the speed camera."
