CWMBRAN Stadium could undergo a £2million transformation as part of Torfaen Leisure Trust’s proposals, it revealed.

Torfaen Leisure Trust is proposing to convert the current four court sports hall into a fitness suite, complete with 80 to 90 fitness stations.

Also to create an indoor climbing centre, introduce a toning suite and convert the current grass pitch into a 3G artificial turf pitch surface.

Plans also include redeveloping the current reception area to contain a coffee shop.

The Trust is working on a commercial funding package from the private banking sector for the project, which will cost around £2million.

The CEO of Torfaen Leisure Trust, Sally Church, said: “The Trust is investing despite the current financial climate and significant spending constraints.

“The redevelopment improvements will provide wider community benefits such as the opportunity to participate in a wider variety of new activities aimed at the whole community and with particular emphasis on children, young people and families.”

It is hoped that the work will go ahead this year, carried out by facility development company Alliance Leisure, and the estimated build time is eight months.

The Trust believe that replacing the current grass centre pitch with a 3G pitch and converting the small sports hall will enable them to meet the demand that they know is there for more and better fitness and sports facilities.

The chairman of Torfaen Leisure Trust, Alun Williams, said: “The proposals put forward are for improvements that are both modern and vibrant. We passionately believe that our customer experience should be first class.

“This is a great opportunity to reward all of our current members for their loyalty and the new facilities will offer a significant attraction to new customers and enable us to grow our business and improve the health and fitness of more people in Torfaen.”

The initial proposals were approved by the Torfaen Leisure Trust Board in January 2014.

But the project is subject to the Trust agreeing a funding package, and panning permission will need to be sought for installation of the 3G pitch.

Ms Church added: “The Trust will ensure that all customers, residents and other local club, or community groups will be kept up to date on progress with the proposals.”
