FUNDRAISERS will be encouraged to fight Wales’ biggest killer, heart disease, by wearing red tomorrow.
Torfaen council staff will join fundraising activities organised by the British Heart Foundation, which helps pioneer research to improve the lives of people with heart conditions.
The charity said that it had spent £1.5 million working with Torfaen council on the Hearty Lives Project, which promotes healthy lifestyles among obese children and adults and pregnant mums.
Tomorrow [March 5], employees will wear red garments, wigs and makeup as they take part in the fundraiser organised as part of the charity’s Ramp up the Red campaign. Heart disease kills nearly 12 people a day in Wales.
Torfaen executive member for health, Cllr Richard Clark, said: “We will continue to build on the success of the Hearty Lives Project and ensure that people in Torfaen can access the support they need to make those important lifestyle changes that will reduce their risk of heart disease in the future.”
The charity said that coronary heart disease was Wales’ single biggest killer as it causes the deaths of 4,300 people each year or nearly 12 a day.
