A NEW group promoting Newport has unveiled its logo after 10,000 votes were cast to choose their branding.
Newport Rises, whose aim is to "help Newport rise to its full potential", launched a voting campaign last week for city residents to choose which design they liked best for the group's logo.
Following the ballot on newportevents.co.uk, the Newport 'Rising Sun' design featuring the Transporter Bridge was announced as the winner today at 5pm on the @newporters Twitter account.
The open group which saw around 20 members attend its second meeting at the end of February commissioned graphic designers Dirty Little Serifs and printers Sticky Ink Studios, both of Newport, to produce logo designs.
Following the brainstorming session, around 13 designs were narrowed down to the final two at the groups February meeting; ‘Rising Sun’ depicting the Newport skyline which won with 6460 votes and the ‘Phoenix, which received 4143 votes.
Jon Dawkins, 29, of Dirty Little Serifs said that the final logo will be used on the official Twitter account of Newport Rises and on merchandise such as Shop Local bags.
“We designed 13 logos in total during a brain storming session with Sticky Ink Studios Ltd and they were then narrowed down to the final two before the public vote,” he said.
“The concept of the phoenix logo was that Newport was rising like a phoenix from the flames and the concept of the 'Rising Sun' was the sun rising over Newport, which is why we chose orangey colours.”
Key member of the group Jerry Secker, 38, said that the purpose of the group is to amplify the positives of the city, its communities and people.
“Our aspiration is to shape the future of Newport by embracing a 'can do' attitude,” he said.
“Newport’s future is its peoples to shape.
“Working together we can help Newport rise.”
Newport Rises have also launched a campaign to promote all the events going on in Newport with the aim to get young people and families involved.
“We also need to find out about more community events going on then we can help promote these," he added.
“So if any readers would like some social publicity through us, we will do all we can to help.”
