A NEWPORT woman has scooped a gold award for her commemorative coin design marking Remembrance Day at this year’s Coin of the Year Awards.
Emma Noble, 38, a designer and engraver, won the Most Inspirational Coin award in recognition of the Remembrance 2012 Alderney £5 coin that she created.
The striking poppy design carries the familiar words that recall the moment peace was declared: “The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.”
Ms Noble visited the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme in France to develop a first-hand understanding of the importance of Remembrance Day, gaining inspiration from the visit before creating a design to mark the occasion.
“The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month – it’s such a powerful moment,” she said. “When I come up with an idea for a coin or medal I don’t really think about who it will appeal to, I just like to draw something which I think looks nice and fits well with the brief we are given.
“It does make me proud to see my design on a coin and win awards for my work.”
The prizes were presented at the 2014 Coin of the Year Awards which took place at the Berlin World Money Fair earlier this month. Entries submitted by countries and mints were assessed by an international panel of judges comprising mint masters, artists and numismatists.
