IT SEEMS that a world cycle challenge attempt isn't enough for two Newport men who now also hope to smash a Guinness World Record for the “Longest Line of Moving Bicycles" on the day they depart.

Dedicated cyclists Robert Shipley, a dairy farm worker, and Ryan Farley, an engineer at Cardiff Railway station, both 24, are gearing up for their ultimate cycling challenge this summer as they cycle more than 18,000 miles around the world in aid of Cancer Research UK.

But on July 6, the day they depart from the Newport Velodrome, the pair aim to set a new Guinness World Record for the “Longest Line of Moving Bicycles” which currently stands at 916 cyclists.

Within the grounds of the Newport Velodrome and Newport Stadium, they are hoping to “smash” the current record and are hoping many enthusiastic cyclists of South Wales will attend on the day, and be part of their attempt for a worthy cause.

So far the pair have raised £1,508 towards their goal of £18,000 - £1 for every mile they cycle and are now asking the public to join them on the departure day.

“It will be a big family day out for the people of Newport and South Wales, with many activities for all to do including live music performances from local talent,” Mr Shipley said.

“Hopefully we can depart for our World Cycle knowing we’ve already set a new World Record and it will give us the boost we’ll need to help us succeed”.

Mr Fairley added: “It’s an event that will allow us to give something back to the public for showing their support for what we’re about to undertake, and we hope it will be a great success”

Starting next summer they will head east through Europe, entering Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia before travelling through China and South-East Asia.

From there they will fly to Australia and cycle across the vast openness of the Outback before making their way to New Zealand.

The next part of their trip will see them fly to South America and make the long ride north through Central America and across the USA to New York on the east coast.

Then they will ride through Portugal, Spain and France before returning home to Newport.

Newport labour cllr Chris Evans added: “It’s incredible experience the lads are about to undertake, and I hope the public of Newport of South Wales are able to turn up to show their support on the day and take part in this unique event for such a worthy cause

“I wish the both of them the best of luck for both events, and we’ll have a bottle of bubbly waiting at the finish line”
