A SUCCESSFUL wildlife project in north Gwent has secured a grant of £365,000 for a further three years of work.
The Big Lottery Fund award will enable Gwent Wildlife Trust to develop similar projects in other areas, particularly north Torfaen.
The trust’s People and Wildlife Project, based at the Environmental Resource Centre at The Works, Ebbw Vale, was set up in 2011 with the help of the Big Lottery Fund and a number of smaller funders.
It focuses on the trust’s Silent Valley Nature Reserve in nearby Cwm, with events and workshops, providing training for people, and partnerships with the area’s schools helping pupils learn about wildlife and the nature.
Work was also done at the reserve and other local sites, to improve wildlife habitats.
“During the last three years, almost 10,000 people have been involved in activities that raised awareness of the local environment and encouraged them to take positive action to care for local habitats and species,” said project leader Veronika Brannovic.
“In the next three years we will get even more people inspired about wildlife and conservation.
“We’ve got big plans for events, workshops, training, after school clubs, volunteering and more.
“Whether you’re a retiree who’s interested in becoming a volunteer shepherd, someone looking to boost your CV with new skills, a parent looking for family friendly activities, or a student wanting some work experience in the conservation sector, the People and Wildlife Project can help.”
