WITH the anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War approaching, we are looking for Gwent people's memories and stories surrounding it.

Did a family member serve in the war, do you have any heirlooms passed down from that period or are you holding an event or service to mark the occasion?

We would like to hear from you as we prepare our special coverage to mark the 100th anniversary of the war.

Events to commemorate the war have already begun in Gwent.

Recently, dozens of invited guests were at Blackwood Library to launch the local Heritage Association while marking the centenary of the First World War.

Books which include names of soldiers taken from war memorials at Blackwood, Oakdale and Pontllanfraith were presented to the Blackwood and District Heritage Association by distinguished guests.

This is prior to the books going on display to the public throughout the year at various libraries and community centres in the villages surrounding Blackwood.

The Blackwood and District Heritage Association was formed in June last year and now has members from a catchment of about five miles around Blackwood.

The books which are currently on display at the library have been jointly produced by the late Les Jones, who died a few weeks ago, and Nick Haynes of Pontypool.

Mr Haynes presented the books to the Heritage Association.

Granville Hale, Mayor of Blackwood and chairman of the Heritage Association, said: “These books have been created and are extremely impressive.

“The significance of all wars in the 1970s was somewhat being lost. Clearly it is of paramount importance that we observe and honour those heroes of the two great wars.

“It’s only right that young people should know about all of this. That is why we invited the heads and head boys and girls of every local school to the event.”

Among those giving speeches at the event were Lord Don Touhig, the president of the Heritage Association and local councillor Leon Gardiner, and Islwyn MP Chris Evans.

Details of the books’ journey through the county borough’s libraries will be announced shortly.
