A WOMAN who was threatened by a man with an axe in a Monmouthshire wood has spoken of her continued fear following a second reported sighting and pleaded with police to catch him “before someone is seriously hurt or killed”.

The victim, who has asked not to be named, was left terrified after she said she was confronted and told she would have her ‘throat axed’ while she was jogging in Slade Wood, Rogiet, a village between Caldicot and Magor, last month.

And police were again called to further disturbing reportings in the area on Wednesday, March 12, reigniting fear among the community in the area.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman, who said the incidents were being treated as linked because of similarities in description of the man and the locations, added: “It was reported around 3.30pm that a man was seen with what appeared to be an axe hanging from his belt.”

Officers, police dogs and a helicopter attended again, but despite an extensive search no-one matching the description given was located.

They said it appeared the man was staying in the area though.

The woman threatened on Minnetts Lane in February said at the end of last week: “Someone is going to be hurt or even killed. This man has to be caught.”

She also said she was struggling to overcome the ordeal.

“I have been seeing a counsellor, but still get nervous and am paranoid,” she added.

“I will never go back to that wood or probably ever run alone around dark fall.”

A 49-year-old man from was arrested following the first incident, which occurred between 4pm and 5pm on Thursday February 6, on suspicion of making threats to kill.

He was bailed, but then released without further action on March 11.

Caldicot councillor and chairman of the West End Residents’ Association, Patrick Maycock-Jones, said concern remained rife.

“People are avoiding the area,” he said. “It could be that someone is seriously hut soon.

“The area needs to be closely monitored.”

Another resident, who also wished to remain anonymous, called it a “serious problem”.
