CHILDREN at Llanmartin Primary School have been making pizza on the school bus – but they’re not in trouble, it’s a charity initiative to get kids cooking.

By the end of this week, 144 children from the school in Underwood, on the Monmouthshire and Newport border, will have learned some kitchen skills in a mobile classroom parked nearby.

Parents were treated to bara brith, pizza made from scratch, apple and apricot filo parcels, rainbow couscous salad, Caerphilly salad and Caribbean fruit salad as children took their dishes home with them as well as the recipe needed to repeat their creations.

Head teacher Victoria Curtis said: “It’s an absolutely amazing thing to see the looks on the children’s faces.

“They’re not just taught how to cook, they’re taught about nutrition as well, and why it’s so important we have our Five a Day.”

The bus stops at a different school each week, normally those in ‘Communities First’ areas.

Mrs Curtis added: “It’s a wonderful experience, particularly for children who perhaps don’t have this opportunity at home.

After children donned their aprons they learned how to hold knives and use a cooker safely as well as picking up tips on mixing up tasty flavours during each 90 minute lesson.

There was also a parent and child session where children could learn cooking with their parents, mums and dads.

The bus came to Llanmartin after the school after it put in a bid for the bus, run by the charity Focus on Food, to come to the school and was successful. It will be parked at the Llanmartin Social Club until the end of the week.
