LORD Don Touhig visited Oakdale Comprehensive School on Friday as part of a bid to get pupils talking about politics.
Fifty four pupils from Year 10 at the school in Blackwood were involved in a question and answer session with the House of Lords member as part of the Peers in Schools Outreach Programme. Lord Touhig was a MP for Islwyn from 1995 to 2010 before he was made a life peer.
Anne Sambrook, a personal social and education co-ordinator at the school, said: “It was brilliant, Lord Touhig was very intuitive with the children.
He spoke with them so eloquently about his position in the House of Lords. The pupils really enjoyed it, I was really impressed with their level of engagement.
“Lord Touhig said that they were some of the best question he has had in the last 20 years.”
She added: “It’s all to do will raising awareness of politics. We had some very positive feedback from the pupils.
