The winner of the folk dancing section was Ysgol Panteg and the winner of the musical composition was Griffithstown Primary.
There were joint winners of the choir section, with first place being awarded to Ysgol Panteg and Padre Pio.
Speaking on behalf of Pontypool Community Council, Ruth Tucker, said: “It was an excellent start to the three day event, and everyone is impressed with the quality of performances that the pupils presented.
“Padre Pio didn’t take part last year but returned with a winning streak, but all of the schools that took part showed themselves to be worthy competitors.”
The junior section of the competition will take place tomorrow, and the comprehensive schools will compete on Friday.
