TWO Locks Nursery will be sold off and be replaced by affordable housing once it closes in September.
Torfaen County Borough Council’s cabinet approved the decision yesterday.
The Cwmbran nursery will close on September 1 as part of school reorganisation in Torfaen, but with no other council service intending to occupy the property it is proposed it be declared surplus to local authority requirements from the closure date.
It is proposed the site be sold off to a registered social landlord with the disposal price is likely to be less than market value. The recommendation is to do this ‘immediately’ to minimise costs.
The report says: “The longer the property remains vacant the greater the likelihood of vandalism and anti-social behaviour taking place, resulting in further costs being incurred.”
The report also says the provision of affordable housing on the site will ‘prevent Torfaen residents becoming homeless’.
Cabinet member Councillor Gwyneira Clarke welcomed the report and said: “We need this site for housing”.
