AROUND 70 firefighters and 20 fire appliances have been at the incident scene throughout the night and all day and are still working hard to extinguish the fire.

A spokesman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they anticipate that the incident will continue overnight and a fire service presence will remain on site throughout the weekend.

A plume of smoke is drifting across the area and is currently being monitored by Natural Resources Wales.

Residents are advised to keep their windows and doors shut as a precautionary measure. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

FIRECREWS are tackling a large fire in Wentloog this morning at an industrial area between Newport and Cardiff.

Recycling materials are on fire at the Atlantic waste management site on Newton Road and the fire is expected to burn "for some days".

Firefighters are having to keep 30-40 gas cylinders near the blaze cool to avoid them exploding.

Crews from Duffryn, Cwmbran, Malpas, Roath, Ely, Central Cardiff and Barry are fighting the blaze at the site, which involves 2,000 tonnes of refuse and has spread to electric cables.

The fire, which began at around 1.30am, also involved surrounding buildings and vehicles.
