TWO people were arrested after Portsmouth and Newport County football fans clashed in the city centre on Saturday.

A man in his thirties was arrested on suspicion of assault but was released with no further action. A man in his fifties was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and has since been bailed pending further enquiries. Both men were from the Portsmouth area.

The disorder happened in both the city centre and at the Rodney Parade ground. A Gwent police spokeswoman said that enquiries into the disorder were "ongoing" with CCTV taken from within the ground and outside being reviewed. She said this may lead to further action and possible arrests.

More than a 1,000 Portsmouth fans descended on the city centre on Saturday to face Newport County and Gwent Police praised the vast majority of these fans for supporting in the “right spirit”.

There was a heavy police presence around the city centre on Saturday, which included dogs and officers on horseback. A team of officers contained a large group of fans outside the Queen’s Hotel before walking them through the city centre.

Will Pannell, bar manager at The Lamb pub on Bridge Street, had a doorman to help with the extra crowds but said there wasn’t any trouble, with both Portsmouth and County fans drinking together.

He said: “It was busier than expected. There was a good bit of banter – a bit of chanting, but no trouble. It’s always good in here.”
