A FOOTBALL league run by a homelessness charity in Newport has kicked off after being officially opened by the Welsh Government’s Minister for Culture and Sport.
John Griffiths, Assembly Member for Newport East, launched the 2014 Street Football Wales (SFW) league at the Play Football Centre in Bettws.
SFW is a charity that works with the housing, care and support organisation, Gwalia. They support people affected by homelessness and mental health issues with the football leagues that are run across Wales.
Outside Newport, there are three other SFW leagues, in Swansea, Colwyn Bay and Merthyr Tydfil.
Communities First also contributed £2,500 of funding to launch the project.
Mr Griffiths said: “Street Football Wales offers people the opportunity to grow as individuals as a result of being part of a team.
“Physical health, confidence and self-esteem can all improve as a result of schemes such as Street Football and I would like to wish them every success for the future.”
