SHOPPERS in Newport got more than their groceries this week, as the Fresh Start team joined families at ASDA to teach them about children's exposure to second-hand smoke in cars.
Parents tested the carbon monoxide levels in their body, found out about their lung capacity and received advice and information on where to get help to kick the habit. Children also learned about the smoke-free message through playing games with Fresh Start mascot Patch the dragon.
Evidence-based research shows that children who breathe in second-hand cigarette smoke have an increased risk of developing respiratory infections, middle ear disease and asthma. It has also indicated that second-hand smoke can lead to serious illnesses such as meningitis and babies face an increased risk of cot death.
