A HOLIDAY of a lifetime was launched by the South Wales Argus taking in a fortnight in North America visiting Boston, Newport Rhode Island, the New York World Fair, Richmond and Washington for £199.
Polling was taking place in eleven wards in Newport to decide which of 24 candidates would serve on the town council for the next three years. Results showed that Conservatives suffered a setback losing three seats. Labour now had nine aldermen and 22 councillors, Conservatives, one alderman and 10 councillors. Nationally, Labour gained control of eight borough councils.
An appeal was made to miners leaders for a statesman-like approach to help the coal industry’s current financial situation.
