FUNDRAISERS from a UK construction company have arrived in Gwent for the final leg of a ‘green’ relay that has raised several thousands of pounds for charities.
Cyclists involved in Kier Construction’s 500 Mile Challenge handed over the baton to six colleagues from South Wales for a ride across the old Severn Bridge and through Gwent.
The event began at Land’s End last month and has proceeded through the south west of England, calling at Kier’s regional offices along the way. The aim is to get the baton to Cardiff’s Ice Arena later this week, using non-motorised forms of transport.
Cycling, running, horse riding, canoeing, kayaking and swimming were among the transportation methods.
St David’s Hospice Care is the selected charity for the South Wales leg of the journey - and so far more than £2,900 has been pledged, out of a total of more than £6,000 for four charities.
After riding through Gwent yesterday, the baton was passed to canoeists for a stage down the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.
The cyclists then took up the challenge again, riding to St Anne’s Hospice and St David’s Hospice Care headquarters, both in Malpas, Newport. They then ended the day at Kier’s office in Stow Hill, Newport.
