A SCHEME to integrate new Year 7 pupils into a Newport high school has proven so successful the school is rolling it out to another year group.
To help the transition between primary and secondary school for 11-year-olds, Llanwern High School set up the Step 7 programme which involves each Year 7 tutor group sticking together for the first hour and 20 minutes of the day for activities involving numeracy and literacy.
The groups move from teacher to teacher each week and Friday is a ‘reward day’ when pupils have an element of choice over their activity.
Last week activities included the Year 7 pupils learning how to play I’ve Got A Feeling by the Black Eyed Peas with music teacher Andy Newell and a world record attempt to create an enormous landscape picture with art teacher Jessica Thomas. Now the programme will be rolled out to Year 8, for fewer days.
