Drenge, Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff
Despite only having one record release to date Drenge already seem well established in the alternative circuit. They possess a dirty, distorted sound that is simple enough so as not to be confusing but is still surprisingly complex. They are one of a number of bands that may at last signal a British response to the Seattle sound of the early 90s.
The show at Clwb Ifor Bach was sold out and, although it is not the biggest venue, this created a great atmosphere. The band only consists of two members but they create a sound which could have filled the room multiple times over.
The set list was comprised mostly of well-known songs from their eponymous debut record with a couple of previews of yet-to-be-released material. If these previews are anything to go by then the next record will be just as good as the last.
Particular favourites with the crowd were ‘Backwaters’, ‘Nothing’ and ‘Bloodsports’. The few slower tracks gave short respite to the audience in what was on the whole a pretty animated show.
Drenge seem to be constantly on tour so any opportunity to see them live is well worth taking.
