VOLUNTEERS are sought to rid an Abergavenny public space of the invasive weed Himalayan balsam, which is at risk of taking over Castle Meadows.

‘Balsam bashing’ sessions will run on the first Saturday of each month until September from 10am until12pm.

A spokesman for the Friends of Castle Meadows said: “The weather is improving, spring is here, the flora and fauna are starting to awake and our mind turns to invasive species.”

The plant, a relative of the busy Lizzie, reaches above head height, grows rapidly and spreads quickly, often smothering other vegetation.

Working parties will also run on alternate Thursdays from 10am to 12pm, with the next one this morning.

There will also be a session on June 18 from 6.30pm until 8.30pm.

To help, meet at the Byfield Lane entrance to the Meadows wearing stout shoes, long trousers and long sleeves.

You are also advised to bring gardening gloves if you have them and a bottle of water.

After a couple of hours gardeners will then progress to the Hen and Chickens pub.
