FAIRWATER High School’s summer art exhibition opened on Thursday night at the Christchurch Centre, Newport, and will run until the middle of next month.
The exhibition contains work from BTEC Level 2 and 3 and A-level students at the Cwmbran school, as well as a selection of artwork from some Year 9 pupils.
The exhibition will be open to the public until July 18.
Last year the school had three Year 11 students entered into the Young Gwent Artist of the Year competition run by the Argus.
Students Laura Donovan, Nia Taylor and Lucy Marshall entered a range of their work from illustration, fine art painting and 3D sculpture, with Lucy winning the 13-18 category and Laura picking up the Visitors’ Choice award.
Students in the department learn a range of techniques from two-dimensional drawing and painting, to three-dimensional work using paper mache, mod-roc, wire sculpture, textile design and ceramics as the department has pottery facilities and a dedicated kiln room.
They’ve also been learning digital skills using Adobe Photoshop.
Head of art Phil Darmanin said: “The students have worked hard to produce their work and are proud to be part of a public exhibition within a modern gallery environment.”
The school will host its awards evening at the Parkway Hotel on June 26.
