AN artist will be demonstrating how she plans to use historical evidence to re-create a Chartist banner in a workshop at Newport Museum.

Christabel Gilbert, co-ordinator of the Mid and South Wales region of the Quilters’ Guild, has based the design on a report found more than 20 years ago in the Northern Star Chartist newspaper by Dr David Osmond.

The workshop, being held as part of the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education’s Adult Learners Week, is taking place on Thursday, June 19.

The Northern Star’s description said a banner was displayed at a Chartist meeting held in in 1841 in Newport calling for the release of Chartist prisoners.

The protest occurred within two years of the battle at the Westgate, where at least 20 men had been shot dead and 50 or more seriously wounded by the 45th Regiment.

The 1841 Newport banner had a precise slogan that read “May Frost, Williams and Jones return to their homeland”.

John Frost, Zephaniah Williams and William Jones were leaders in the South Wales Rising of 1839 and were found guilty of treason at the Special Commission held at Shire Hall, in Monmouth.

They were sentenced to death by hanging and quartering on January 16, 1840 but due to popular protest, the sentence was changed to life transportation.

Dr Matthew Roberts, of Sheffield Hallam University, will be joining the workshop and sharing his database of more than 500 slogans and images from 19th century newspapers.

When finished, the Newport Chartist banner will be presented to the Chartist Anniversary Committee to be displayed at this year’s 175th anniversary events before being displayed at the city’s museum.
