The driver of the car died at the scene of this morning's crash, a spokeswoman for the Welsh Ambulance Services said.
The driver, a 41-year-old local man, was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no passengers. Officers remain at the scene while an investigation takes place.
He was driving a red Ford Cortina.
She added the car collided with a telegraph pole so therefore telephone lines in the area may be affected – BT has been informed.
UPDATE: 8.42am
ONE person was freed from their car this morning after it crashed into a telegraph pole.
A South Wales Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said that the driver of the vehicle was the only person in the car when it crashed in to the telegraph pole on Monmouth Road, Mitchel Troy, at 4.22am.
Malpas and Monmouth crews were called to the scene and removed the driver from the car using hydraulic cutting equipment before leaving at 5.37am.
