IT WAS all about the pink as thousands of women took part in Cwmbran's Race for Life today in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The annual 5km charity race held at Northfields Recreation Ground in Cwmbran drew 2,262 runners and is expected to raise more than £100,000 this year.

Among those taking part was Izzy Roynon, 15, who came second after crossing the finishing line in 20 minutes and four seconds.

She was raising money with her auntie Donna in memory of her granddad Alan Roynon who died of stomach cancer aged 70 in 2007.

Her grandmother Rosemary, 73, of Cwmbran, said: “I think it’s marvellous. She came over last night from Wiltshire and I bought her a shirt because she wanted to wear pink.”

The organisers said they had hoped to get 2,200 entries so they are pleased to have reached their target and expect to raise around £102,000 this year.

Events manager Kelly Rumble, 35, said: “I think it is fantastic to see a sea of woman and children who all do it for the same cause to beat cancer.

“They all have their own reason. They have got cancer, know someone close who has cancer, or are celebrating for someone who has recovered.

“It’s fantastic to see they can really make a difference today.”

Some ran in groups like the “Olivant Clan”, including Sarah Olivant, 17, who finished the race in 23 minutes and her auntie Catherine who completed it in about 21 minutes and 12 seconds.

Catherine Olivant, 40, of Brecon, said: “I had two friends who passed away and my boss has just finished her treatment for breast cancer.”

Air cadets also helped to marshal the event and gave out medals to participants.

Air cadets Sgt Mark Kitson said: “We support the Race for Life and have done so for the last three years. I think it is fantastic they are supporting cancer research.”
