A 75-YEAR-OLD pedestrian injured in a collision with a blue people carrier at a car wash remains in a critical condition this afternoon.
Police arrested a 26-year- old man on suspicion of careless driving and driving without a licence and without insurance following the incident in Llantarnam Road, Cwmbran, on Sunday morning.
Police yesterday said the Gloucester man had been bailed pending further enquiries and the pedestrian was in a “critical condition” at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.
Community members spoke of their shock yesterday.
Emma Jenkins, 28, a sales assistant at the Co-op store in Llantarnam Road, said: “It is sad. I hope he is OK, fingers crossed. It is not a regular thing.”
Llantarnam ward councillor Maria Graham indicated traffic had been disrupted in the area in the wake of road works a few months ago but felt it was now quiet.
Cllr Graham said: “It is a really terrible accident that has happened.
“The community were very concerned about the welfare of the man in the accident.
“My thoughts are with him and his family.”
The pensioner was initially kept at Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport but has been transferred to Cardiff.
Gwent Police are appealing for information to the incident at around 9.45am.
When they issued an appeal on Sunday, officers said the owner of the people carrier may not be aware that their vehicle was involved in a collision and officers are appealing for them to get in touch.
A police spokesman said yesterday: “The 75-year-old pedestrian has now been transferred to the University Hospital of Wales where he remains in a critical condition.”
Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call 101 quoting log 237 22/06/14.
