THE logo for the Newport Nato summit is to be graced with the iconic Newport Transporter Bridge, No.10 Downing Street has announced.
Foreign secretary William Hague and Nato secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen will unveil the logo, which will be festooned with an array of Welsh symbols, in Brussels today (Wednesday).
The image of the Transporter Bridge – one of only six operational transporter bridges worldwide and an icon of the Newport skyline – will be seen by thousands of delegates and media attending the summit.
The news came after first minister Carwyn Jones greeted world leaders including US Secretary of State John Kerry at a special Welsh themed event in the Belgian capital where Welsh wine from Monmouth's Ancre Hill Estates was served.
According to No.10 Downing Street the Transporter Bridge was chosen to represent Newport as the host city. The logo also features a castle, a dragon to represent the Welsh spirit and the Celtic Knot to represent Welsh heritage, as well as the Nato symbol itself.
No.10 said the logo was designed to provide a forward-looking, strong, modern logo drawing on Wales’ diverse heritage.
The UK government is also inviting people from across Wales to share images on Twitter of what makes Wales special to them. Images of Wales tweeted with the hashtag #MyWales between now and the summit could be viewed by attending world leaders.
