THE trust which owns the building which is used as Usk Library is waiting to hear from Monmouthshire council for its future plans for it.
It plans to move the town’s library and education centre into the youth centre on Maryport Street to develop a community hub and out of the current building, which is also used by a nursery.
The authority ran a consultation on Wednesday and Saturday last week which a spokesman said was attended by more than 150 people.
The acting chairman of the Roger Edwards Educational Trust, Chris Cowburn, said: “The site is currently let to Monmouthshire County Council by the Roger Edwards Educational Trust, who are pleased that it is currently used for educational purposes for the benefit of the community in line with the objects of the Trust.
“We have not been given notice that Monmouthshire county council intend to give up their lease, and cannot make any plans for the future use of the site until we know what Monmouthshire county council’s intentions are.”
But Save Usk Library group leader Julie McGowan has said she was concerned about the potential impact the plans could have on services for the town and surrounding villages.
She said: “At the public meeting held in November Cllr Bob Greenland talked about giving Usk a better service and about it being a community hub but this will diminish our services. It seems like they have already decided it’s a fait accompli.”
